Edith Evans Community Library
In 1896, Norman and Minnie had a daughter Laona, who was the first child born to a settler in the area. About that same time, the railroad was completed and Barney McGinley was chosen to name the new site. He named it after the newly born Laona Johnson.
Laona school and public library services have shared a combined space at Laona High School since 1918.
After a 1985 fire destroyed the old high school, a resurrected Edith Evans Community Library and school library media center reopened in a new high school addition to the elementary school building in 1987.
The library media specialist and a public librarian were on duty during the week for nine months of the year and the public librarian managed summer services.
